Connaught Avenue is where the townspeople gravitate for general and independent amenities including light lunches and civilized evening entertainment, whilst the mile long golden sandy beach, when the tide is out, beckons those looking for a leisurely day out soaking up the summer sun, or taking a brisk walk on wilder windy days. Frinton-on-Sea was first referenced in the Domesday Book of 1086, appearing as Frientuna. Until late Victorian times Frinton was just a church, several farms and a few cottages. It was then developed as a fashionable seaside resort, attracting visitors from high society, such as the Prince of Wales who frequented the golf club and Churchill who rented a house, while Connaught Avenue was known as the Bond Street of East Anglia. With its air of serenity and communal pride, the town’s genteel nature continues to prevail ‘inside the gates’ today. Even the Tennis Club feels like a mini Wimbledon with the so many manicured grass courts, in fact it was world famous during Edwardian England as next to Wimbledon, Frinton was regarded as the major venue on the tennis calendar and a social standing on par with Henley and Ascot.
